It is important to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) if you want to go to graduate school or business school. The GRE is a computer-based, multiple-choice, standardised test that is often needed to get into graduate school and MBA programmes around the world. A lot of law schools in the US will also accept a GRE score as proof of eligibility.
Test maker ETS created and gives the GRE so that graduate, business, and law schools can use the same criteria to compare candidates’ skills and readiness for work at the graduate level. The GRE test, along with your academic record and other materials that support it, is used by admissions committees to decide if you are ready for the challenges of graduate school.
What do you think? Your applications to graduate school, business school, or law school will all look better if you get a good GRE score.
What are the GRE sections?
You will receive three scores on the GRE:
- Analytical Writing
- Verbal Reasoning
- Quantitative Reasoning
These scores are generated by the following sections:
- 1 Analytical Writing Assessment section
- 2 Verbal Reasoning sections
- 2 Quantitative Reasoning sections
In addition, you will see one of the following sections:
- Unscored (may be either Verbal Reasoning or Quantitative Reasoning)
- Research (used for ETS research purposes)
You can get a number between 130 and 170 on both the Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning parts. Verbal Reasoning has an average score of 152, and Quantitative Reasoning has an average score of 156. The Analytical Writing Assessment has a scale from 0 to 6 with each point worth half a point. The average score is 4.0.
